FUEL FOR THOUGHT – WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW AT THE PUMP: Vehicle tank capacity in the owner’s manual is only an estimate. Your tank may hold more or less than the stated capacity. Don’t “top off.” Topping off may damage your onboard refueling vapor recovery (ORVR) systems, which may cause poor fuel economy or trigger a "check engine" light. When topping off, the excess gas can be pulled back into the pump's vapor recovery system, preventing spills and sending it to the station's storage tanks rather than your vehicle. This means you may end up paying for fuel that is returned to the station, and it can also damage your car's evaporative (EVAP) system. Contact your local Weights and Measures office with questions and concerns. |
